Moscenicka Draga is a small town on the Croatian coast that some have nicknamed ‘the Croatian Portofino’ because of its wonderful beaches, which are said to be among the most beautiful in the Kvarner region. The town is an ideal destination for those seeking a relaxing, slow-paced holiday in contact with nature, as many outdoor activities can be organised here.

Once upon a time, Moscenicka Draga was especially popular with aristocratic families who travelled to the Opatija coast in search of a quiet, green destination. Although the old town centre has retained its conformation and ancient structure, over the years Moscenicka Draga has developed its tourist vocation and has become a perfect destination for those seeking a relaxing stay, but also for those who enjoy activities in contact with nature.

Beaches of Moscenicka Draga

Moscenicka Draga is known for its beautiful beaches, some of which can only be reached by sea, while others are small inlets or secluded coves that can be reached on foot where you can lay out your towel in the sun and relax. The main beach of Moscenicka Draga is also known as Sipar and is a beach a couple of hundred metres long consisting of small pebbles that are washed by turquoise waters.

Being close to the city centre, the beach boasts numerous restaurants, bars and cafes in the vicinity. Moving southwards is Sveti Ivan beach, a quiet pebble beach that also reserves a small area for naturists. Four kilometres south of Moscenicka Draga, along the road towards Brseč, is a little piece of paradise: Uboka Bay, which is considered a true oasis of peace. Once you have parked your car, you will have to climb a flight of steps to reach this beautiful pebble beach where the blue of the sea meets the green of the lush nature that surrounds it.

Things to do in Moscenicka Draga

Moscenicka Draga boasts a cosy, human-scale old town with numerous cafes, often a legacy of the Austro-Hungarian period, as well as several restaurants serving Croatian cuisine. The waterfront is an ideal place for a romantic stroll at sunset, and walking along it you can find a monument dedicated to the partisan troops who landed here on 25 April 1945.

A maze of narrow streets connects the most historical part of the city with the picturesque harbour area where you can admire small boats and fishing boats. In reality, the town of Moscenicka Draga began as a small port of the town of Moscenicka, which was located further inland on a hill, sheltered from enemy attacks; over time, however, Moscenicka Draga grew in importance and became the main centre of the area, while the inland areas became increasingly depopulated.

At an altitude of 173 metres, the old village of Moscenicka still stands, which is now connected to Moscenicka Draga by a flight of 753 stone steps. Its small historical centre contains not only belvedere terraces overlooking the coast, but also the old town loggia, the historical oil mill and three beautiful churches. Also not to be missed is a visit to the village of Brseč, another hamlet of Moscenicka Draga that sits on a hill 150 metres above sea level and is surrounded by lush green forest.

The parish church dates back to the 14th century and has a square-based bell tower carved from a tower of the former 13th century castle. While this beautiful area is washed by the sea, it is also surrounded by the Učka mountain range, making it the perfect destination for those who enjoy hiking, mountain biking or other outdoor activities.
